Boom?

Well the bomb seems to have been a false alarm, but the Bomb Squad blew it up anyway - you can see the story here:

Travel wasn't badly affected by this because it was at the quiet end of this street - if it had been further along it would have cut the main route through the town which is what everyone was assuming at first.

Wonder if we are in for more of these?

I need some advice about cameras.

My video camera has died, so I need to replace it.

I like the look of the new ones that are coming out with a built in HD projector - some see this as a gimmick, but I can see it being rather useful.

Alternatively I could get a good camera that also does video.  Video cameras don't temd to take good stills, so this also has its appeal.  I like taking photos.

Any thoughts on this would be very welcome!

Yes, get a smart phone preferably an iPhone. Best darn camera and video going. Wait a month for the upgrade and you get true 1080P video and 8mega pixel camera. Plus you can call home and listern to all your music and navigate, and shop....

wReggie - I was expecting you to tempt me with some sort of super-gadget!

I like point and shoot cameras.

I think I have to agree with wReggie. I don't have an iPhone but know plenty others who do. They take amazing photos! But if you want to go cheaper, see if you can find a point and shoot camera that has video function. My Nikon Cool Pix does.

wReggie - I don't want anything too fiddly either - too many photos are missed while messing with focus, exposure, etc!

Terri - It's not a price issue - the Sony with built in projector isn't cheap! There is just so much out there that I was hoping for some interesting pointers such as these.

We just did a lot of research on cameras because.. uhh.. well.. I dropped ours. We got an Olympus 5010, because it has:

14 MEGAPIXEL
An amazing 14 million pixels in the high-resolution CCD create superior image quality. Create poster-sized prints without losing a single detail.
5X WIDE-ANGLE ZOOM
You’ll never leave anyone out. With its 5x optical zoom you can get dramatically close to the action, and capture everyone and anyone in sight.
2.7" LCD
This large 2.7" LCD features an extra-wide viewing angle and anti-glare technology for easier composing and shooting even in direct, bright sunlight.
1GB INTERNAL MEMORY
Store more photos and videos than ever before, right in your camera with 1GB of internal memory.
DUAL IMAGE STABILIZATION
Dual Image Stabilization combines Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds so you can capture crisp, clear images even if the subject is moving.
ONE-TOUCH HD MOVIE
With One-Touch HD Movie you can record widescreen, crystal clear HD movies (720p) right from your camera.
AF TRACKING
AF Tracking automatically tracks unpredictable, fast-moving subjects such as kids and pets, and continuously adjusts the focus and brightness so you can capture these photogenic whirlwinds with ease.
CREATIVE ART FILTERS
Using Creative Art Filters you can give your photos a distinct look and artistic feel by applying one of four different in-camera effects, including Pop Art, Pinhole, Fisheye and Drawing.
INTELLIGENT AUTO
The Intelligent Auto setting identifies the scene you're shooting -- portrait, landscape, night portrait, macro, or sport -- and adjusts the settings to optimize results.
IN-CAMERA PANORAMA
In-Camera Panorama captures three images and stitches them together to create one amazing panoramic picture by simply pressing the shutter button and slowly panning across a scene.
SHADOW ADJUSTMENT
Shadow Adjustment Technology brings out more details in shadows. It helps capture scenes exactly as you see them, even in difficult lighting situations, such as backlit shots.
BEAUTY MODE
Beauty Mode takes beautiful portraits by softening shadows and smoothing wrinkles and blemishes on your subject's face. Edits can also be made inside the camera after taking the picture.
PERFECT SHOT PREVIEW
Using a live, multi-frame window on the LCD, you can preview the effects of various settings, select and capture the perfect shot.

Direct from the manufacturer's page: Your mileage may vary.

James - Wow, sounds like a great piece of kit! I will have to look this one up myself. Thanks for the pointer, it sounds like just the sort of thing I was hoping for!

A digital camera takes good video too (unless you want to get HD). Mine is only 8 megapix (4 yrs ago) and I still found the pics beautiful. So i don't feel the need to get SUPER cameras etc.

My advice for you; If the thing is good enough and made you happy, price shouldn't matter :)
