Snug as a Bug

We had been complaining about our old mattress for over a year.  It had become lumpy, bumpy, saggy, even spiky in places.  It needed to go, but we just never found the time to get out, look at what was out there and actually buy one.

But last Saturday it happened.  Maybe it was to reward ourselves after my Graduation, but while in town we ambled into a shop and literally bought the first one we saw.  It was just sitting there, waiting for us.

I like a bed to be nice and squishy, so I can snuggle down in it.

Mrs RC likes it to be nice and firm, even hard.  For her the best bed we ever had was a thin mattress put straight on the floor.

This one manages to be perfect for us both - squishy on top with very firm springs underneath.

And it was a great price too!

We looked, prodded, etc.

Then we looked half heartedly at the rest, before going back to the first one and buying it.

We like to think we are good customers.  We see what we want and we buy it, no faffing, no trying for a deal, etc.  Times are hard for shops right now, they don't need their profits pinched even further, especially small locally owned shops like this one.

It arrived yesterday while I was at work, so after getting out of my wet cycling gear, I flopped on the bed.  Ooooh Yeah!  That is a great mattress.

I called down to Mrs RC, asking if I could have dinner in bed, but she refused, but I did end up in bed earlier than usual, relishing the wonderful snugness while reading Herodotus....

A good bed can make or break your day. It sounds like you found a good one that will pay off for years to come. And that is important since we usually spend 1/3 of our lives in bed. Ours is getting on in age, but it will last a few more years.

Nice find! So the just-right Goldilocks mattress is not a fairy tale after all? And thank you for the new verb to add to my vocabulary: faffing.

Agg79 - similar to my view of work - we spend so much time doing it we really should try to enjoy it too.

Abby - Yes, faffing is a great word.

Oh man, there is NOTHING like a really great night sleep on a really great mattress. And I wouldn't let you eat dinner in bed, either!

Oh. You went to bed early to READ. I was a little nervous as to where that sentence was going....
I love our new(er) mattress. Hubby hates it. I think a sleep number bed is in our future. Yours sounds like it's a great fit for you both! Perfect graduation gift!

We've been looking for a new mattress too. We found one a couple of months ago that we both loved. A friend of mine thinks we should research, go to bunches of stores, try all the different kinds out there before deciding. But we're kind of like you. We'll probably just go back for that one that we both just loved. The only hold up right now is that I'm pushing for a king size bed and he wants to stick with the queen size. Once we come to an agreement, we can just go get the darn thing.

I'm glad Mrs. RC didn't let you have dinner in bed. You don't want crumbs in there, do you???

Cheers. What is faffing?

I did a lot of googling for reviews on mattresses before I got mine last year. I had no idea that my 20 year old mattress had gained about 80 pounds from dust and debris through the years. (or is that another form of advertising ploy?)

I wanted the softest, squishious mattress known to man and found out that those "sleep by number" beds can get mold in the air chambers....

I ended up rolling around on every mattress in the store til I found one JUST RIGHT.

To me, that one of the most important purchases there is.

Meleah Rebecca - Meanie! :-)

ShadowRun300 - I am glad that I am still at an age where you think I might go to bed for something other than sleep and reading. :-)

Terri - You only need a King Size to make room for the dogs!

Riot Kitty - Faffing is wasting time on stuff that does not matter but but keeps you from what DOES matter, e.g. "stop faffing with your hair, we need to go". Similarly, something can be "a faff" if it is a pointless waste of time, e.g. a lot of form-filling can be seen as "a faff".

Lotta Joy - I think that this is one thing where I am starting to feel age creaping in. I used to be able to sleep anywhere and on anything. I still can, but now I notice if I am uncomfortable and have strange clicks if I wasn't.

Looks like congratulations are in order.... first for the purchase of new sleeping equipment.... there's nothing like a good night's sleep.... and second to say well done on your graduation! One day I should do that. Never went to Uni, needed to go to work, and have always regretted it.
And one more thing.... so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. Losing a parent is a sad event.

Shammickite - I see a fair number of people who are going to Uni later in life, often just for the fun of doing it. An old friend of mine, who had given up uni when she got married, returned to studying for her English Literature Degree when she was nearly 70 and had a great time.
