Shadowthorne - I think that half of the problem was the distance from the heart of the Empire to Greece - supporting a large army at such a distance was a massive task. The other problem was that the Greeks were just tough fighters - the Empire hired them in thousands (there were 30,000 in one battle against Alexander the Great!) because they just couldn't home produce anything as good.
I was watching House Hunters on our HGTV station and they showed a young man looking for a place in Sweden - in the last shot he is shown in his "hobby" area and he has all these warrior figures lined up on a table in the background - thanks to you I knew what they were!!! Love the photo of Custard!!!

Always good to have a nice dog shot. Rub Custard on the head for me.
Oooh, more new toys to play with? I've fallen in love with Custard, what soulful eyes!
wReggie - Will do!
Shrinky - Yes, he really knows how to tug on the heart strings...
It still galls me that the mighty Persian empire got problems beating men who ate olives, goat cheese and onions!

Those are some pretty impressive warriors! But Custard definitely wins the adorable award!
Great pics, and Custard is definitely cute!
Terri - I know, Custard wins everyone over.
Marie - Thanks, and he knows it too.
You do have a very interesting hobby. This is a great photo of Custard.
Smashing. We have had no dog for two years. Thought we were too old. the tv program Young Ones? have decided us otherwise.
TechnoBabe - Thanks - but it is hard to take a bad pic of Custard...
Ken - You are never too old to have a dog, so long as you choose sensibly - I would love another Irish Setter but would never get one now.
