In recent months, we have been watching a TV trivia show called QI, hosted by the wonderful Stephen Fry. Various subjects are discussed by a group of commedians who bounce thoughts around in what is often incredibly funny exchanges. Sometimes it get a bit rude - but not too rude, IMO. It is a show that we all enjoy and watch as a family.
In one episode, Dan Brown's books (Da Vinci Code, etc) were mentioned, and Stephen Fry described them as "utter arse-water".
A few days ago, my youngest was talking about a book he is reading and how he is going to have to tell the rest of his class about it.
"Do you think I would get told off if I described it as utter arse-water?"
I immediately recognised the origin of this wonderful phrase.
"You might get away with it if you said that you were quoting Stephen Fry. And said it without laughing or having that cheeky grim of yours."
"So if I said it like Jeeves would say it, you think I might get away with it?"
"You might, I guess, depending on your teacher."
"Hm...."
Now I am wondering if he is going to say it, and if so if he will get away with it. Maybe we will be summoned to the school and be expected to be shocked! Not sure I could act shocked - I would probably laugh to be honest.
Such a bad parent...

You pretty much called it - depends upon the teacher and their sense of humor (or lack of). If you get call on the carpet for his "honest opinion" you can give your opinion as well.
BTW - I've read most of Brown's books. Good for a distraction on a long airplane flight.
nah... i would definitely not label you a bad parent! encouraging your son to be his own person is as important:) can't wait to hear if he said it or not!
Agg79 - Very true! My wife has read those books and was not at all impressed.
Kenady - Thanks for that! I will definitely write about it if he does say it...
Wigsf - That would definitely do it over here too - I think that the old British influences still hold quite strong in Canada.
Wigsf - where did your blog go?
Ha! I love it! That would definitely have us laughing out loud "over here". Not sure what buttons that pushes "over there" though :) Nothing wrong with a little honesty; the world could use a lot more of it!
Kate - Glad to see that the humour travels well. More honesty? Wouldn't that be shocking!
I just KNEW you were a QI person, we never miss it, either! He might land in trouble, but it'll be worth the cudos he receives from his peers - anyway's, who wants a robot for a kid? Btw, from what I can see, both you and Mrs. Rock Chef are brilliant parents.
I am shocked! I can't believe you're encouraging such behavior! It's parents like you who make teaching such a difficult job!
Okay... you got me. I can't pull it off. I love it! Hope he says it and get's away with it. I have a feeling the cheeky grin you mentioned gets him off the hook for things like this.
Why quote when you can make up wonderful and more colourful descriptions?
Quoting is for lazies.
