Cheese

I am a bit of a Jeeves and Wooster fan. Do you get that overseas?

This is a classic scene from last night's episode:

You may recognise Wooster (on the piano) from House, the TV hospital series.

Jeeves, otherwise known as Stephen Fry, has been doing a wonderful series on TV where he drives all over America in a London taxi, visiting famouse cities and then talking to the most unlikely people, eg some homeless in Chicago, the Hmong in Minneapolis and a cheese maker somewhere in Wisconsin. He totally bypasses the obvious things, clearly going very close to Graceland, for example, without even mentioning the place!

While talking to the cheese maker, he made the bold statement that American cheese is utterly disgusting, and the cheese maker (who makes her own cheese from sheeps milk) agreed! I was surprised at this - I thought the Americans ate a lot of cheese, so surely it must be good!

Any thoughts?

i love Hugh Laurie!

i've never seen a Jeeves and Wooster here, but that doesn't mean it doesn't run over here as i don't watch a whole lot of tv.

I have a crush on Hugh Laurie.

I have a crush on cheese.

But I don't know about that show - I've recently started noticing it playing here once in a while, but have never sat down to watch it. Maybe I'll give it a shot :)

Kenady - Hugh Laurie is great, isn't he? We have seen him go from half of a comedy duo to being a mega star! And he actually seems to be a nice guy too!

Ali - You have a crush on Hugh Laurie? What, as he is in House? Give Jeeves and Wooster a try - it is classic English comedy, and could have been written for these two guys. My family gets through loads of cheese - we put it on everything, even curry!

American cheese is pretty crappy, really. Overly processed and such. We can get really good cheeses, but you have to go to good supermarkets or specialty shops. A lot of that stuff is imported from Europe.

But I don't eat cheese anymore so I don't really care! :-)

I luv cheese - maybe even more than life... mmmmmmm

Mindy - Thanks, I got the impression that this was the case. But you don't eat cheese? How do you survive?

Mr Zig - Good to see the shocks didn't have a lasting effect :-)

When I was in Pennsylvania recently my daughter took me to a farm and it turned out the couple spent 6-8 mons. in Europe learning to make cheese - I bought some and I loved it - so much better that what I normally get!!! There must be a difference and we are more accepting of the poor quality.

Ali - I think that is the secret of his success - he plays a total asshole but you still love him! If it was anyone else you would just end up hating them!

Claire - I guess if that is all you have known then you are going to like it! I used to like pastrami from the supermarket until I was introduced to the "good" stuff!

Sitting in Silence - I sometimes wonder about you. Is it being upside down all the time or something? :-) Anyway, glad you like cheese! I guess the question now is "what is Aussie cheese like?"

I love Hugh Laurie. I first remember noticing him in the movie, Stuart Little. He's such a versatile actor! I've never seen Jeeves and Wooster. I wonder if it airs here at all?

I disagree that American Cheese is disgusting... wait a minute... maybe it is. There is that whole VELVEETA thing. It's not even real cheese!

Rock Chef said...

Terri - Yes, he was in that too! Given his success in House I would have thought that someone is showing Jeeves and Wooster. Veleeta? I am going to have to look that up now!

Okay, yesterday when I checked your blog there was not a comment button but now there is!

i love cheese... just love it. but american cheese is the worst of all!! i'm not surprised the cheese maker thought so as well.

i've never seen this series... i so wish i could. i'll have to check around and see if it ever pops up on cable...

what's your favorite cheese? do you do fondue? i love fondue.. but haven't done it since we lived in the states. gosh, they have some of the best fondue places there....

one of my favorite cheese is brie from france... i think ... i'd have to look. i also love white cheddar... YUM!! i actually love most cheese unless it's processed, then i try to stay away from it. naief also loves cheese :) and hubby too. :)

Teresa - Sorry, I have no idea why my comments button vanished! Funny how cheese makes us feel good...

Um Naief - Brie (from France) is really good. My favourites are things like Wensleydale and Cheshire - very creamy with wonderful flavour. I hate blue cheese. We keep meaning to do a fondue - maybe we will have that as part of our Christmas buffet eating!

He's right. Americans do eat a lot of cheese. They douse everything in cheese. And American cheese is a tragedy. It's juvenile. Now take a fine aged bleu cheese a mild brie or swiss, a sharp cheddar or guyere ( w/ wine for fondue) and now we're talkin'.

Velveeta is a brick of orange substance that could likely survive nuclear war - stay away from it. Ick!

Never seen that show here in the states. But I do love me some Absolutely Fabulous - Eddy and Patsy crack me up! A fridge full of champagne is my dream kitchen. I miss that show! But my hubby is a dear . . . and one Chrsitmas he bought me the DVDs.

Love the Jeeves and Wooster - wish we had it here - I just had a chance to sit and watch all the different ones.

Miss Got Wings - Ab Fab is one of our favourites too. I looked up that Velveeta stuff and I think I have experienced a version of it - Squeezy Cheese in a plastic bottle. You have to microwave it for a few seconds each time you use it. The kids were horrified by it and I ended up leaving it in the microwave for too long and melted the bottle!

Claire - You watched them all? Glad you like them, I think the characters and humour are wonderful.

There is a lot of bad cheese in the U.s., but the cheese industry has really blossomed in recent years, especially in regards to organic cheese!

I'm a huge fan of Brittish TV, and while I've heard of Wooster and jeeves, I've never watched it. My personal favs are Red Dwarf, and am not ashamed to admit I watch the crap out of The Eastenders. LOL!

Keeping up appearances is also another great one.
