A chance meeting

While out walking today I met a couple of girls that went to school with my eldest daughter. Seeing them was a strange experience - how grown up they were, one pushing a baby, the other with her little dog, Frank:

Isn't he cute?

Just had me thinking - I could be a grandad by now!

One with a baby already? It's funny how we don't think of ourselves as being at the grandparenting stage of life until we happen upon a situation like this.

When I was bowling Monday, I was talking with a girl on the team and her sister who was watching. They were 22 and 23 years old. They mentioned their 26 year old brother and their 3 year old niece and a baby nephew who is on the way. Then they told me that their mom was born in 1966. Same year as me! It really made me realize that I too could be a grandparent by now. I hope it will still be a while though.

Terri - Sophie would have been 21 now, the age that my wife was when we had her! A lot of girls have babies by that age, although thinking about it I doubt Sophie would have been rash enough to do that. But yes, we are now getting to the age where grandparenthood (is that a word?) is imminent!

yah, but you two are WAY cooler than our grandparetns ever were. My grandpa didn't rock out on the guitar and grandma certainly didn't bowl with the gutter sluts. or is it the ball busters? something like that.

I still don't see my parents as "older". It's tough from this end as well. I see them getting on in their years & it breaks my heart. They can't do things as easily as they used to be able to do the same things. I understand that no one lives forever, but it's my parents. I can't imagine life without them. . . .

I hope your daughters friends are well and happy! Frank is adorable in his cute little sweater.

Miss Got Wings - Yes, I think that the next generation of grandparents is going to be fun!

Comment deleted? I don't get many of these - always makes me wonder what the person wrote! Oh well.

Jen - I know how you feel - my parents are gradually falling apart - my dad has had cancer 3 times and my mom has arthritis all over the place but somehow keeps moving, mainly through sheer willpower I think! The girls seemed very happy, one was actually much happier than I remember her being as a child which was nice to see. Frank is mega cute, it was because of him that we started chatting and only then recognised each other!

Wow...I bet it's hard to think about that from a few different aspects. I'm sorry! For whatever it's worth...I think you'll be one of the coolest grandpa's EVER!!

Teresa - I think I would have to rename myself - Rockin' Grandpa?

Sitting in Silence - He was a cool little dog!

Um Naief - It is a strange feeling - mainly I think it highlights how our lives changed when we lost our eldest daughter. With our oldest now only 14, grandparenthood is, hopefully, a fair way away! But had things been different, I don't know. I don't really feel that much different inside to when I was in my 20s. I think that is the odd thing about getting older, your body changes and people seem to think that you should change too, but you don't - well I don't anyway!

i'm the same as you... it's weird that you say how your body changes but you don't change inside. some days, when i'm out and about, i think about how i feel like i'm 20 something, but i don't look it any more. i think i'll be like you... very young mind, but old body! :) i think it's the best way to live though... keeps you young.. or so i hope! ;)
