Still here!

Despite the efforts of the 90mph winds to do away with me, I am still here!  Sadly there were others who did not make it - falling trees caused 4 deaths in southern England and a teenager was swept into the sea while dodging waves.

Yesterday started early, when we realised that we were losing our back fence and garden gate.

By 6.30 we were slaughtering the Honey Suckle that grew along one of our other fences - the wind was using it to uproot the fence, so it had to go.

Once things seemed to be more under control, I visited Humphrey, my mum's pony, but he was OK.  Just needed a plank on his stable bashed back into place.  Good job I took a hammer and nails with me!

The rest of the day was spent making repairs to our remaining fences - the back one will have to be totally replaced, but we have to wait for someone to come and do that - and rigging up a temporary back gate.

All is calm today - a sunny day, with blue sky etc.

I have got a few photos of yesterday - will try to post some later.

And here they are:

Clearing up debris - some of the fence and Honey Suckle  :-(

Frou Frou wanted to help, but had to make do with watching us out of the window.

The view out to sea from Humphrey's field.

So glad to hear you made it through without any serious trouble.

Sad to hear of those who didn't make it. Mother Nature is a nasty force sometimes.

Good God! I thought of you when I read about it hitting Kent - wanted to email you but didn't have your address. So glad you guys are ok!

Terri - Yes, the deaths were all pretty random. Except for the wave dodger, he was predictable, although more often it is someone walking their dog: the dog gets swept into the sea, the owner dives in to rescue it and drowns while the dog makes it back OK...

Riot Kitty - Aw, thanks for the thought. mawaliuk@yahoo.com

Heard all about it on the TV news.... it was all pretty violent! When I was a child in N Devon we used to run through the wave spray on a stormy night, so I know how easy it can be to be swept away by the seas.

Shammickite - Yep, I used to watch my older brother doing it, but hung back myself as I thought it was dangerous. He was saved by the prom railings a few times...

Nature's powerful stuff. So sad about the deaths, the poor teen just trying to have some fun...

Glad you are all okay except for the fence casualty. Leave the bike home for Frou Frou to watch over if it happens again, enjoy calm blue skies in the meantime :)

When you said it was windy, I didn't realize you meant WINDY! Glad to hear you all are ok, with the exception of the honeysuckle. :(
Humphrey's windmills must be working overtime. I've always thought windmills are a beautiful sight. Not just because they appear so graceful, but because of their purpose. I'd love to see more wind farms (or seas in your case)continue to be put in place.

Abby - Oh, I didn't cycle in THIS wind - I am not totally nuts :-)

ShadowRun300 - I love windmills, I really don't see what people hate about them. OK they aren't the most efficient way of generating electricity, but they sure beat nuclear and coal, and the more they work on them the better they will get.

Thank goodness Humphrey was ok, maybe a little disgruntled at all the wind though I bet. So sorry to hear about the people who lost their lives in the storm. Isn't it amazing how it can be one extreme and the next day calm and serene and beautiful.
