Winter is here...

The last week or so has been very wet - wet to the extent of serious flooding and a few deaths in some parts of England.  Not nice.

But the wind seems to have changed in our parts at least - the warm wetness is giving way to colder air from the north.  The photo above is looking South over Canterbury, with the clouds being chased away by a biting cold wind.  Wondering if snow will follow any time soon.  A White Christmas would be fun!

Gloves.

I have a bad history with gloves.  I tend to lose one of a pair on a fairly regular basis.  My last pair had lasted relatively well.  This was probably because, after the loss of yet another glove, Mrs RC threatened to attach my new gloves to elastic and thread them through my coat sleaves.  I did not lose one from that pair - I actually WORE THEM OUT!  They were a sorry sight by the end, holed, ripped with the stuffing collecting in the finger tips making it hard to put them on properly, and begging for retirement.

So I have now retired them and bought a new pair of mittens.  Not just any old mittens, though, these are Extreme Ski Mittens that are so warm my hands are sweating by the time I finish my journey.

They are great!  Makes me wonder why I have avoided mittens for so long.  I haven't had a pair of mittens since I was about 12 years old.  They were sheepskin and amazingly warm.  I lost one of them...

But it's so hard to pick your nose in mittens.

Wigsf - not when your nose is as big as mine is!

Oh wow! Those Extreme Ski Mittens look amazingly warm! You better not lose those!!

And it's definitely "winter" in these parts too. I am hoping for a white Christmas!

Mr. RK is constantly losing his gloves. When we're out walking and it's cold, I always ask where they are. "At home so I don't lose them."

Meleah - Hope you get your white Christmas - post photos if you do!

Riot Kitty - How about putting them on elastic like Mrs RC threatened to do to mine?

Those look like good mittens! I had a nice pair of wool mittens with a fleece lining in them. I didn't wear them much. Mittens feel too bulky to me. I have a decent pair of leather gloves. I gave the mittens to my son's girlfriend lost weekend. She lost one of hers!

I've never ridden a bicycle while wearing mittens, hmmm, I'm wary of the lack of dexterity.

But, I remember reading that women's hands are more sensitive than men's. It goes back to the hunter/gatherer times. The men were out chucking spears at big things while the women were back home digging for roots and stuff.

Maybe that's why you lose your gloves??

I almost got frostbite back in my Army days in Germany so I am bit overly sensitive to colder weather. Mittens are bulky but they do tend to keep the digits warmer. I have several pairs of gloves (a bit possessive on a pair) that I use when it turns colder down here but nothing as extreme as yours. I even have a gaudy pair of fur lined gloves for when I used to ski but I haven't used those in years.

Mittens aren't good for anything involving fine motor skills, but they ROCK when it comes to keeping your hands warm. Those look very similar to the pair that I use for running in the dead of winter. So cozy!
I usually find my mittens and the kids' gloves in the dog's mouth. Don't know what it is about them that make them so attractive to her. Similar to stuffed animals, I suppose.

Terri - Bulky but warm - cycling with frozen fingers is not fun :-(

Abby - That is it! When I chuck my spear my glove flies off with it! As for the dexterity thing, I can still change gears and use my brakes OK. Rude gestures at bad drivers are not as good, though.

Agg79 - I guess something like that teaches you a good lesson!

ShadowRun300 - Custard, our golden labrador, has a real thing for gloves - I guess they collect a lot of interesting smells. Frou Frou, our terrier, prefers socks.
