ARE THEY SERIOUS????!

As I headed back towards work at the end of my lunch break, I saw something that caught my attention.

In the middle of the shopping precinct there was a table with a parasole set up. On the table were lots of cakes of all kinds - fruit cakes, cream cakes, jam and cream sponges...

These were being sold to raise money for charity.

Nothing odd about that, I here you say!

Of course not.

Until you see the charity that they are raising money for.

It was...

Now I have nothing against this charity, it is a great thing! But selling CAKES? Are they trying to increase their membership or something?

Maybe I am missing something here?

Boy oh boy. I don't really know what to say about that? Clearly there are mixed signals to say the least. . .

Talk about feeling guilty and compulsive.

Are you sure they were serious? That seems aweful weird to me! Did you buy one?? :)

I'm not sure if I should laugh, cry or shake my head in disbelief. That is too much!

I can't believe this is true. I am an OA member, it has changed my life. OA is not a charity and this would not only be totally appropriate from the food point of view but in direct contravention of our Traditions one of which states "We are self supporting through our own contributions neither soliciting or accepting outside contributions".

I was guessing Diabetes, but... after reading that last comment, I'm thinking someone was putting on quite a scam!

well, almost. OA is not-for-profit. It is a 501c3 corporation; it is a "charity". However, our donations come from INSIDE rather than outside the membership.

To be extremely far-fetched, it would be an interesting way for a newly abstinent person to rid themselves of food they no longer wished to eat.

But that would be an incredible leap of faith!

hmmm... food is the way to ppl's hearts... maybe they were trying to tap into that.

Jen - It was very strange to see, I must say.

Teresa - No, I didn't buy one - I was too surprised and confused to think properly.

Kenady - It did seem really odd to me too.

Johnnyboy - Hi! Glad to hear they helped you. If I didn't cycle everywhere and have a metabolism that makes my larger friends hate me, I would probably be a member too! All I can say is that they were there, selling cakes. I wish I had chatted with them now to find out the whole story, maybe there is more to it. I will look out for them again this week and see if they are around.

Terri - Could be, I guess. I will be looking out for them again now!

Javelin - Hi! That fits with one thought that I had - perhaps it is some sort of therapy for the people doing it. If I see them again I will talk to them and find out.

Um naief - The language barrier strikes again! They usually have 2 layers of soft, "sponge" cake, with fruit jam and cream in between.

Sitting in Silence - Ah, another one with the therapy idea - I am really wanting to know the answer now!

Kiki - Not a joke - certainly seemed bad to me, but after reading some of these comments I am even more intrigued to find out more about it.
