Friday...

Phew, been a long week, finally bumping onto the weekend.

Planning on a totally slobby weekend, good family time, painting a few more Vikings, typing up a bit more zombie book, playing a bit of guitar, etc....

Number One Son is settled back at Uni again and working hard.  One of his latest modules is actually challenging him!  Yeah, amazing!  Before this he has worked hard but rarely felt that he is being taxed mentally.  He won't let it beat him, of course...

We had a long discussion on Skype the other night - made better by plugging the laptop into some external speakers - about capital punishment.  It was sparked by a news item about a guy who was recently executed by lethal injection and took longer to die than usual.  Lots of views on this and I think we covered most of them, from "hang them all" to "it is not their fault, society is letting them down".  Not sure where I stand, to be honest - I think my view varies from case to case, really!

Anyway, let's not get bogged down in all that! It is time I shut down this PC for the weekend and went off to do the things I mentioned above!

Oh, but before I go, I was just invited to go on a fieldtrip to the tiny isle of Lundy for a week.

Makes me think of Craggy Island. Apparently we will be staying in a bard (make that a BARN!).  There is one pub and one shop and not much of a phone signal.  Sounds like a blast to me!

I am fascinated by capital punishment. I had a friend who was executed for double murder in South Carolina by electric chair. I've never written about it on my blog because it was so surreal.

I believe it was the Brits who came up with the formula for the drop hang.

I read about that guy who took "forever" to die from the new injection. How'd you like to be the test subject for that?! I agree. Case by case.

I want a fieldtrip to a tiny isle. I thought a bard was a poet. How do you stay in one? Oh well, sounds like fun!

That sounds like cruel and unusual punishment. Yuck. I think we are all responsible for our actions (unless in the middle of psychosis), but I don't support giving a government that power. I mean, more than 100 people have been freed from death rows in my country when cleared by DNA evidence.

On the craggy island! I will have to look that place up. Have fun!

WReggie - Just wow.

I too am conflicted, mostly in favor of life long incarceration, because if you think about it, that's more of a punishment than death. Death you no longer exist, but to exist in confinement with no freedoms -- ugh!

You'll be visiting one of my old stomping grounds.... I'm from N Devon and have visited Lundy a number of times. Maybe you'll be staying in the Marisco Tavern? It's a wonderful island, but very bleak and windswept.... dress warmly! (BTW I think it's non-smoking.... you don't indulge, do you?)

Enjoy your slobby weekend! It's good to have one of those now and then and it sounds like you've got plenty to keep you entertained.

The little island looks like fun. I'm sure it will spur some adventure-filled blog posts. Can't wait!

wReggie - That must be a strange thing. And yes, the English were big on hanging for a long time - you could be hung for just about anything!

Abby - Should have been Barn. We do not intend to hollow out Shakespeare!

Riot Kitty - Hanging was ended over here after a few prominent executions of people who should not have been.

TZ - Yes, I think you are right.

Shammickite - I have never been a smoker, so no problem there!

Terri - Yes, I will be sure to take lots of pics and tell you all about it.

I'm looking forward to some pix of Lundy... and of North Devon.... it will make me terribly homesick.

When it comes to Capital Punishment my view varies from case to case, as well.

Hope you had a FABULOUS weekend!

A holiday on that island away far away from civilization sounds heavenly. I'm with Terri - love to hear some island stories when you get back. I imagine another chapter for the zombie book, perhaps?

Having a debate over capital punishment can be opening a can of worms. There are valid arguments on both sides. The media loves to spin up the hype/drama to a frenzy level.
