At the Movies

Finally got to see a couple of movies that I have really wanted to see for some time.

The first one was 2012, a story about the end of the world which sadly comes after the 2012 Olympic Games. If it came before it would certainly save us wasting a ton of money on this stupid event! The movie was very entertaining, a good action movie, but didn't have the depth that I had expected - I think I heard the words Mayan Calendar once, but that was about it. I still enjoyed watching it, and it was certainly better than the cheaper version which we saw a couple of weeks ago...

The second movie was Avatar. I sat down to watch this one with massive preconceptions. The director was the guy who gave us Titanic, one of my pet hate movies. Add to this the ground-breaking 3D stuff at the cinema and I had the distinct feeling that this movie is really going to suck.

But it didn't. I really enjoyed it, a great mix of action, shifting emotions, a bit of humour, some good morals, a not very well hidden history lesson, even a moment that brought a lump to my throat! I liked it so much that I think I have actually forgiven him for Titanic! Hey, most people have something dodgey in their past...

Finally, I had a great find at a boot sale/fair. Found a copy of this classic movie on DVD. Tom Hanks and Shelley Long together - what more could you ask?

Tom Hanks has made some great movies. I can understand why you liked his movie with Shelley Long. I haven't seen Avatar.

The Money Pit takes on all new meaning after I started renovating old houses.

wigsf - I don't think I have seen Volunteers - will have to look for that!

Technobabe - Avatar is well worth it, IMO.

Sparky - I can imagine!

I like Hanks in a number of movies.
- Apollo 13
- Cast Away
- Forest Gump

Avatar is a very good movie, good visual effects, old story line. My son saw it when it first came out and his initial impression was that it was the same basic story line as Pocahontas or Dances With Wolves. I liked the movie, but some people were trying to read into the political undertones of the director (it's just a freakin movie).

2012 was enjoyable as an escape movie (lots of things blowing up or falling down).

And the money pit was one of those silly, early Hanks movies that is like eating cotton candy.

I never see movies until long after their hype has died down. I'm sure I'll see both of those eventually.

I actually saw and remember The Money Pit. I don't remember liking it very much, but that was more because of Shelley Long than anything else.

I hate Titanic TOO!!! (mainly because I despise over-the-top love epics)

Avatar is OK. I bought the dvd last week and it was awesome on my big screen tv.

2012 is so laughable. I can point many scientific flaws, but many would just scream for me to shut up (in the cinema).
