Oh Dear....

On Fathers Day, I was lucky enough to acquire an extra present.

Number One Son had a normal Kindle, but has recently bought a Kindle Fire too.  He loves the Fire so much that the old Kindle became redundant - so guess who the new owner is?

That's right!

So far I have downloaded 3 books, all freebies.

One is TAFL, a book about a Viking/Saxon boardgame, similar to chess.  It has lots of variations in board size, number of pieces, etc, but the basis of all versions is the same.  One player starts in the middle of the board, with a King and some soldiers.  The other player starts with a larger force of soldiers set up around the edges of the board.  The King must reach the edge of the board and escape.  I am sorely tempted to make a nice wooden board and find some nice figures to play it with.

The other books are classic history books, one about Scotland (background for my Scottish army) and one about the Goths.  All good stuff.  And it won't be long before I start looking at proper books - some holiday reading.

Yes, I have a couple of things on my hit list already...

Nice. You could download a copy of Treadwell. I'm still old school - paperbacks. Haven't made the jump to e-readers.

Agg79 - Yes, that is one on the hit list. I am becoming a rapid convert to the ebook, it makes it so easy to get obscure stuff!

So that's what Vikings did to keep busy between raiding and pillaging.

I'm still old school too, but you and Lotta Joy are peaking my interest in Kindles. Especially now that I know I can get a Scottish history book for free! ;)
Enjoy your new toy!

Wigsf - They had to do something... Of course, it is also good ammo for those who think the Vikings were just peaceful travellers who got bad press...

ShadowRun300 - The main attractions for me are the huge amount of free/stupidly cheap stuff and easy access to obscure things like Scottish history books, zombie books and books by people who find it impossible to get published on paper (at least until Kindle sales have persuaded publishers otherwise).

Most excellent! Happy Belated Father's Day!

I see one of these in my future. Resistance is probably futile. Enjoy yours!

And I'm ashamed to admit that until now, I thought the only goths were those people that like to wear black Victorian clothing and eyeliner.

Hey guess what? My book is on the Kindle!

Meleah Rebeccah - It is indeed most excellent!

Abby - Hah, I can see an alternate history exercise now - how "eyeliner" goths destroyed the Western Roman Empire...

Riot Kitty - Excellent! I will hunt it down.

I was also a reluctant convert to the e-reader. And while I still love a "real" book, I enjoy being able to lug around numerous books in one with my Nook. (You might be interested in registering for free and cheap books here: http://home.bookbub.com/home/).
