Bubble, our oldest rabbit, died yesterday. She was, at our best guess, 9 years old which is pretty good for a rabbit. We had a feeling that she was nearing the end, but she was active and happily eating on Sunday. She leaves behind 2 children and 2 grandchildren. We think we gave her a good life.

I like to cook - I think I have made that clear over the years. I happily turn my hand to traditional English food, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, barbeque, etc and everyone seems to enjoy.
But one thing defies me.
Making porridge in the microwave....
I suspect that the problem is caused by, um, BUBBLES?

Sorry about Bubbles. With the number of rabbits you've had over the years, how old will they get to be?
Um, yeah, I'd lay off the porridge in the microwave. Or at least dial back the time a few seconds. I nuke my instant oatmeal every morning as well.
Agg79 - Apparently you can expect to lose them to old age any time after 6, so 9 isn't bad. As for the porridge, I think I need to go back to using the huge plastic jug - there is no way that could over-flow. Hm, do those sound like "famous last words"?
My Ramsey was a lopp ear and had full run of the house since he was litter trained. I had noticed the phone hadn't rang in days, then saw the cords hanging in mid air, having been chewed in two. But still, he stayed cage free.
He started a habit of eating Hershey Crunch Bars. Then he stopped eating everything BUT Crunch Bars.
When he was 8 years old I noticed he was starting to sleep away from me, behind furniture, etc. Then he just laid down and never woke up. People said he was JUST a rabbit, but after 8 years, no animal is JUST an animal.
We buried him in the pouring rain at midnight and I couldn't even go to work the next day for crying.
As for your porridge, the trick is to use a MUCH larger bowl. One that looks ridiculously large. It will stop the overflow. AND, stir it during the cook time. Sheesh. Must I tell you everything?
Lotta Joy - Ramsey sounds like a great bunny. I know a few people who have house bunnies, and they too have had chewed wires. Guess you need to do some work before letting them loose. Thanks for the advice - I will be going back to the huge plastic jug for porridge making...

I boil my water in the microwave, then pour it over my instant oatmeal. No overflow that way. Wonder if porridge works the same way?

I have learned to stand watch when I microwave my oatmeal. The stuff has a mind of its own and waits just until you're not paying attention to explode over the sides of the bowl!
Here I am feeling sorry for Bubbles, then you go from dead rabbit right to cooking! You crack me up!
side bar: pop some actual butter in your porridge prior to nuking it. You'll be happy and have less mess now. My job here is finished.
