The Real Thing...

Earlier this week I decided that I would give up drinking "fat" Coke.

I went to the shops and bought a couple of bottles of Coca Cola Zero instead, knowing from experience that this is the least-bad diet cola - for me anyway.

The first 3 days went OK, I merrily drank my Zero with no apparent ill-effects. Then, last night, I stopped to buy dinner on my way to spend the evening at a friend's house. I bought a chicken kebab with garlic sauce and chilli sauce. Hm, going to need a drink to go with this.

I looked in the fridge.

There was all sorts in there.

But there was no contest - I grabbed a bottle of "fat" Coke, and that was it. I am back on the sugary stuff, I can't shake it.

Should I think about rehab?

  1. I used to be a Pepsi girl. I couldn't drink diet anything for the life of me. But then I switched and stuck it out, and now I can't drink the regular stuff at all!

I would think though, that with all the cycling you do, that you don't have to worry about drinking "fat" coke.

  2. I'm with Terri, once I switched, I can't go back to the regular stuff. It's SOO sweet.

And I also agree with part 2- with all the cycling, if that's your worst vice, I say keep it!

  5. I think I gained another 10 pounds (oh weight you're in the UK..um, 22 kilos? -- i'm not sure i did the math right...anyhow I digress) when I went to the suger free stuff. So you're doing your body good by enjoying yourself

and the kebob thing sounds yummy!

  6. I have never been much of a pop drinker but take away my coffee and look out. At least I now drink 1/2 real and 1/2 decaf. It's a start. I just love the smell and taste of coffee first thing in the morning.

  7. So. From what I understand anyway is that all this so-called fabulous sugar-free stuff (i.e. nutra sweet, sweet n low, splenda) is, basically, one molecule away from being fermaldehyde. It's terrible for you, your body and your brain. It causes major health issues. In fact, it was denied 7 times by the FDA before it passed and got into our food system. Money talks.

I think you're better off drinking the sugared stuff. Cycling and your walks will balance it out. Enjoy your life.

  8. Rock Chef, I gave up Mt Dew over a year ago and although I have had one once or twice, I have not gone back on the stuff!!!!

I substitute sweet tea (iced) or Propel fitness water, the peach flavor is a-ma-zing!!!

  9. sometimes there is just no substitute for the real thing - plus, the real, original way is better for you anyway - all this new scientific stuff is full of crappy chemicals anyway

  10. I don't know if this is just me with my weird stuff - but I love what I call the "first pour" out of a bottle of Coke over ice - it is just the right fizz and sweetness - I drink Diet Lipton Green Tea all the time - but love a real Coke every once in awhile - not a can though.

  11. Terri - My wife is the same, only has a small sip if desperate.

Princess - Yes, I think it is my worst diet vice, so thanks I will stick with it.

Logzie - We don't get caffiene free Pepsi, only the Coke version which is really nasty stuff!

Ali - Sorry, everyone else seems to think I don't need rehabilitating!

tz - Pounds are fine for us Brits! BTW you should have divided, not multiplied. 22 kilos is 48.4 pounds!

Chachi - I have never liked coffee - or tea, which makes me something of an outcast in England!

Jen - Is that stuff really that bad? I had heard that it might not be that good for you, but wow!

Kiki - I think that was a good move - go for something totally different !

Zig - Thanks for the reassurance - now, where did that bottle go?

  12. Claire - I only like ice with coke if I get to drink it quickly, otherwise the melting ice makes the coke horrible!

  13. I gave up Coke and all other fizzy drinks a long time ago. I'm convinced that they rot your stomach. I know it's boring, but the best drink for you is water.

  14. I love diet coke! And as of late I have been drinking diet wild cherry pepsi. I know the chemicals are bad for you and all, but I haven't been able to kick the habit yet. I do enjoy a mountain dew from time to time. And I love Arnie Palmer which is half sweet tea and half lemonade.

  18. Marie - I do drink a lot of squash at home, which is mostly water...

Kenady - hm, the only cherry version that I seem to like is the "fat" one :-(

MommyK - Hi, welcome to my blog! I only tried Dr Pepper once...

Mindy - Really? I don't think I know ANYONE who loves Diet Coke! Until now, that is!

Rachael - Thanks for the encouragement, but the others seem to think I am better of not giving up! Oh well.
